Phlebotomy - Top Tips

Below are some useful tips that can help you have a successful career once you have completed your training as a Phlebotomist:


- Introduce yourself to the patient and ask for important information such as patient’s name and their complete date of birth.


- Have all the necessary equipment ready such as tube container, sterilizing pad etc. Remember to wear Sterilized gloves before you proceed with the real job.


- Ask the patient to hold their arm low and form a fist so that the vein would bulge making it easier for you to spot.


- In order to minimize the pain for the patient, inject the needle very slowly into the vein and keep your hand steady until you have collected the required amount of blood.


- When taking the needle out, make sure your angle doesn’t change. Also, keep your hand steady and withdraw the needle smoothly and slowly.


- At the end of the procedure, remember to discard the need using an appropriate close-lid container.


- Use sterilized cotton to absorb any visible blood on patient’s arm and then apply gauze to the lesion.


- Try connecting with the patient at a personal level by building a good rapport with them.


- In order to be a good Phlebotomist, you must be self-confident and have a complete grip on your job.


- Be gentle with the patient and make them feel comfortable by talking to them. But remember not to get too friendly or disclose any crucial medical information to the patient.


- While you’re drawing the blood, give it 100% of your attention. It’s advised that you keep any items of distractions away such as your blackberry etc.


- Make sure you know all the safety procedures well by heart. These could include steps to take in case the following things happen:


1) Patient faints
2) Patient starts sweating profusely
3) Patient demonstrates symptoms of allergic reaction
